Hi guys - I realise this post is quite old now, but wanted to add for anyone else who comes across it in a search as I just did.

My husband and I moved us and our dog to Australia from the USA in 2006. (From Florida to Brisbane, QLD).

We flew our pup from Orlando, FL to LA and decided to stay for a few days to break up the trip for our dog (then a 6-year-old Aussie cattle dog, so quite a resilient breed :)). She loves travel but that was her first time on a plane.

We ended up using IPTLAX.com and would recommend them as pet movers. I was horrified to read of your experience with the pet moving company you used - def something fishy going on there!!

ANyway, if anyone has any questions on our move feel free to drop me a line at O_Brienjc@hotmail.com or read about our dog moving experiences at the Aussie/Kiwi expat web site at www.matesupover.com

Thanks!
Jodie :)

I have used PetMove.com twice - once to ship to Finland, where everything went according to clockwork, and our agent JANICE, was excellent. But the second trip, we got a gal who was nowhere near as good. Thankfully everything went off okay, but she was confused and confusing (and I'm used to shipping dogs as I breed showdogs!). I would use PetMove again BUT...I wouldn't have anyone but Janice help us. Glad you got there, and thanks for posting this information.

Your experience proves my point of avoiding
using 3rd party pet shippers. Much better
to ONLY deal with persons who will have
hands on...
Using Carol Moore at: World Wide Pet
Shipping in Los Angeles is by far the best way
to Australia and New Zealand. Then using
someone near original residence location to
provide transport to Los Angeles.

Thank you for sharing this information! It is very helpful. We are moving to Rwanda, Africa and are bringing our 2 dogs as "checked baggage". Did you consider this option?
We also have to get our dogs microchipped to go through the EU. Were your dogs microchipped? If so, do you know the brand you used? Our vet carries the "Homeagain" microchip and I am waiting to hear back from the tech dept to see if it meets ISO norms 11784 and 11785.

Our dogs left Atlanta at 7am EST, and were put in cages then. They got to San Francisco around 11am, where they were taken out and walked around for a bit before they were sealed in to crates for the trip to Sydney. I believe the longest they spent in cage was the San Fran to Sydney trip... around 16 hours from sealing to opening. The people in Australia are great and really take care of things once they get here. Overall trip was ~25 hours. This included some time out of cage to walk around... but overall certainly a long trip. We are here in Sydney ~3 years so it made our decision easier. Hope this helps and good luck with your decision!!!

Thanks so much for this information! We went through a very tough decision process with our two boxers as we are moving from Birmingham, AL to Perth (a bit further than Sydney...tack on about 5 hours to the trip). With our dogs' high anxiety levels and the relatively short duration of our stay (perhaps 1 year), we have decided to let our "kids" stay with family members while we are away. From your input and what we've learned, it just seems like the trip might be too stressful for them (they are even terrified of thunder!). But just out of curiosity, what was the total amount of time your dogs had to spend in their crates (including flight, layovers, and pickup time)?
